CRAIG W.
PETERSON
Coach Craig Peterson comes from a long background of swimming success. As an age-group swimmer Coach Peterson was annually one of the top swimmers in the nation, excelling particularly in the breaststrokes and Individual Medley.
During college, Coach Peterson chose the University of Pittsburgh over perennial powers in the Big Ten and South East Conferences. During his time with the Pitt Panthers, he achieved much success. As a sophomore, he was voted the Team’s Most Improved Swimmer and help lead the Panthers to their then 13th consecutive Big East Championship. Over the next few years, Craig was voted team captain for his senior season, selected to multiple Big East All-star teams, and continued to help the Panthers win back to back to back Big East Conference Titles.
Graduating in 2001 with a B.A. in English Writing/Journalism, Craig continued to train with his long time club coach Al Rose. With the JCC Sailfish, Craig became a Speedo Series Champion, attended numerous Junior and Senior National Championships, as well as continuing his pursuit of qualifying for the Olympic Trials.
After narrowly missing the Olympic standard once again in 2004, Coach Peterson retired from competitive swimming and turned his attention towards coaching a new generation of local swimmers.
In 2005, Coach Peterson graduated a second time from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.A. in Communications and began his work as the Assistant Head Coach and Strength Coach for the university aquatics team, Team Pittsburgh Aquatics, at the University of Pittsburgh.
In 2006, Coach Peterson worked with the Peters Township Swim Club and as Men’s head swimming coach led Pittsburgh Central Catholic High School to a WPIAL team runner-up finish and had 9 members of the team qualify for the PIAA Championships. After his time with the Central Vikings was complete, Coach Peterson moved on to West Virginia University.
During the 2007 season at West Virginia University, Coach Peterson worked as the university team’s distance coach and also as the head coach of the aquatic club, West Virginia Aquatics. During his stint at WVU, Coach Peterson helped the team win their first ever Big East Championship in 2007.
Coach Peterson has passed Levels One, Two and Three of the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA) in conjunction with USA Swimming’s coaches’ education program. In addition, Craig is a certified lifeguard and also a certified Personal Fitness Trainer.
